In addition to routine adult immunizations, men that have sex with men may be exposed to more pathogens and can benefit from other immunizations. These are three types of vaccines you should consider:
1. Hepatitis A and B vaccines:
Both of these viruses are sexually transmissible. They are viral infections of the liver and can cause serious complications, including liver failure and liver cancer. Hepatitis B is bloodborne and is transmitted the same way HIV is transmitted. Hepatitis A can be transmitted through oral sex.
B2. Meningitis Vaccine:
This is a bacterial infection of the brain and spinal cord. Outbreaks and clusters of meningococcal meningitis have been reported among men that have sex with men in the United States (eg, New York City and Los Angeles) and Europe. The department of public health in San Francisco recommends that certain individuals get the vaccine. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) also recommends meningococcal vaccination for all adults with HIV.
3. HPV vaccine:
Human Papillomavirus can cause genital warts as well as rectal cancer. More recently, the virus has also been thought to cause cancer in the throat and pharynx, although this is not fully supported by evidence yet.
Make sure that you remain healthy by preventing common illnesses with effective immunizations.
