In 2007, Osra Medical’s founder, Dr. Nas Mohamed, was a pre-med student who spent his school break going from kindergarten to kindergarten across Doha with teams of doctors and nurses, giving children oral polio vaccine.
His alma mater, Cornell University in Qatar, wrote a report about the campaign as piece of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, one of the largest public health efforts ever attempted.
Even as a pre-med student, Dr. Nas understood this need for community. He told the college reporter that ending polio depended on parents, teachers, and the wider community, and that educating them was what allowed health workers to better do their jobs.
Those three ideas: prevention through community, education before intervention, and care that starts with consent, are the same ones behind Osra Medical’s current mission. The gaps many see in our traditional medical system is rarely about the medicine. The gaps are in trust, information, and access.
“Experience shapes knowledge”
After his pre-medical and medical training, during a research trip to the U.S. as a medical student, Dr. Nas was able to share who he was. By the end of his residency and fellowship, he sought asylum and built a new life in San Francisco.
A practice built around the patient
Dr. Nas spent his first years in San Francisco working inside large primary care companies. He has said that the joy in that work came from patients, and most of the frustration came from the system around them.
He opened Osra Medical in 2019. Osra means “family” in Arabic, a name chosen for patients building new care communities. His mission is to help his patients to be seen, heard, and given the freedom to seek care while being themselves outside of a medical system organized around insurance reimbursement and institutional schedules.
From one doctor to a care community
What began as a solo practice is now a team of clinicians and staff Dr. Nas has hand-chosen because their care holds up to his standards.
In 2022, he became the first Qatari to come out publicly and founded the Alwan Foundation to help LGBTQ+ people in the Gulf be seen, safe, and supported. This year, the Love Is The Goal campaign brought that message to San Francisco during the World Cup.
