As the first publicly out individual from Qatar, Dr. Nasser Mohamed has a unique perspective on the LGBTQ+ community and its rights, particularly in the Gulf region.

He founded Osra Medical in 2019 to address the complex needs of individual patients without the constraints of funding from back-end affiliations and large corporations. Four beliefs drive Dr. Nasser Mohamed to be an advocate and activist for change within the LGBTQ+ community:

• Everyone deserves to be seen and treated with respect.
• Everyone deserves access to mental health care and treatment without fearing retaliation from their employers or any professional organization.
• Everyone should have access to sexual health care without feeling judged or marginalized.
• Each person’s needs are different, and how they receive care needs to be individualized

Despite the progress made in recent years, the LGBTQ+ community still lacks fundamental rights and freedoms. Many individuals do not feel comfortable or safe expressing their gender identity or sexuality in public.

In some countries, especially throughout the Middle East, homosexuality and transgender identities are criminalized, with penalties that include imprisonment and even death. Dr. Mohamed founded The Alwan Foundation to increase the visibility of the situation of the LGBTQ+ community by accurately reflecting the circumstances and living conditions of the LGBT community in different Gulf countries and to inspire others to act for change.

Dr. Nasser Mohamed has extensive experience in grassroots LGBTQ+ activism and has been active in difficult discussions in public forums and with government officials. However, he believes that you don’t have to have crucial social standing to affect change.

Dr. Nasser Mohamed always aims to leave each speaking engagement with its attendees thinking about one thing they can do to help individuals in their community lead better lives. There are substantial discrepancies between the quality of healthcare that members of the LGBTQ+ community receive and that of the straight and cisgender population. Many LGBTQ+ postpone or avoid medical care due to cost barriers and trauma resulting from discriminatory health insurance policies or past adverse treatment by healthcare providers.

More than half of the community reports having at least one negative experience with a doctor over the last year, including subjection to abusive language and refusal to provide reproductive care, gender-affirming care, and the documentation of gender dysphoria. LGBTQ+ individuals are more likely than non-LGBTQ+ to have mental health concerns, and discrimination in healthcare settings can significantly exacerbate these issues.
